Make your own vase

As I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, flowers are my favorite way to accent a home. Well, when accenting a home with flowers, I like to be creative and vary the vase designs that my flowers are held within. I enjoy creating my vases and have learned a fun technique for creating a great looking vase out of a 2 liter soda bottle. I love these vases, because I have kids running around and things made of crystal tend to get broke. Also, I am a fan of recycling, so when I am bored with the vase, I simply throw it in my recycle bin and I’m good to go. Here are the steps for creating your own flower vase from a soda bottle.

Creating flower decor

Flowers are a great way to accent any home. They are one of the easiest ways to decorate because they can be arranged to compliment any type of style used within the home. I, for example, have an entirely vintage décor arranged within my home. Everything is at least 30 years old, including my claw foot tub that I adore so much. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of thing I can use within my home to accent my personal style, add some color and a fresh scent. Luckily, my yard resembles something like the secret garden. I can walk out there, choose from a wide-variety of flowers and create some home décor.

Lovely Lilies

Not everyone loves lilies the way I do. Their wide variety of colors and great scent has made me a fan of this flower for years. Did you know that the flowers grow in almost every area around the world? I have to say, the tiger lily is my absolutely favorite. The bold color and busting dots make this type of lily look rather exotic and can cheer me up in an instant.

Other than their lovely fragrance and variety of colors, lilies are one of the easier flowers to grow. Plant the flower bulbs at the first sign of spring; allow them to sprout and when the first frost comes simply support the stems with straws.

Lovely Blanket Flowers

When you hear the term blanket flower, you probably picture something white and drab—like Blanket in The Brave Little Toaster, maybe. But the flowers are actually anything but! Blanket flowers are vibrant and gorgeous, like vivid sunflowers that are hardy and beautiful. In fact, the flowers are a member of the sunflower family, which explains a lot. You can add them to your space for a zesty burst of yellow color, or to just cheer you up every time you look at them.

Invasive Species in Baltimore

Several different species of aquatic plants are considered to be invasive species of concern in Baltimore, as well as the rest of the Maryland area. Though many of them are popular, residents are encouraged to remove them as well as cease purchasing or using them, as they present a danger to naturally native plants in the area, as well as to the various animals who depend upon them.

Here are a few of the species that people are encouraged to avoid if possible. Contact your local conservation department to get help in removing them.

Pawpaw: Not Just Another Name for Gramps

Did you ever think that your old Paw-Paw was kind of, well, fruity? Most grandfathers can get pretty silly with their grandkids (unless they’re too busy cursing at the neighborhood rug rats to get off their lawns…), but the pawpaw tree, native to Maryland, is actually famous for its fruit.

It’s actually small tree or shrub, a member of the custard-apple family; so it’s no surprise that its fruit can be pretty popular. They’re not apples, however, but large berries that are full of seeds. They start as green fruits, blooming in September and October, and mature into yellow or brown berries, featuring similar flavors to mangoes or bananas. This also isn’t a surprise, considering that the custard-apple family is a tropical group of trees. In fact, the pawpaw is the only member of the family that’s native to northeastern America.
